National Mentoring Month (2009)
Date: Early 2009
Lena Headey appeared in a video to promote National Mentoring Month 'Be a Mentor' campaign. The video was shot during the filming of the second season of
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008-2009).
Created by the Harvard School of Public Health and MENTOR, National Mentoring Month (NMM) is marking its ninth year in 2010. By focusing national attention on the need for mentors, as well as how each of us—individuals, businesses, government agencies, schools, faith communities and nonprofits—can work together to increase the number of mentors, we assure brighter futures for our young people.
NMM celebrates mentoring and the positive effect it can have on young lives. Its goals are to:
• Raise awareness of mentoring in its various forms.
• Recruit individuals to mentor, especially in programs that have waiting lists of young people.
• Promote the rapid growth of mentoring by recruiting organizations to engage their constituents in mentoring.

PETA (2008)
Date: Autumn 2008
---
Back in 2008, Thomas Dekker and Lena appeared in a Peta video, supporting Prop. 2 in California. Seen in the video is Lena's dog Angela Lansbury along with some of the other dogs that she owns.
Prop 2 is the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act. Prop 2 concerns a law that would take effect in 2015 to eliminate veal crates, gestation crates, and battery cages in California. In other words, calves, sows, and hens would finally be given enough space to simply turn around, lie down, and stretch their limbs. Although we at PETA would, of course, prefer that no animals be killed for food whatsoever, lessening the hell that these animals are put through is something that can be accomplished when Californians go to the polls.
I think something you're gonna eat deserves a brilliant life. The best you can have.
In 2008, Ms. Headey also appeared in an anti-circus public service announcement (PSA) for PETA. In the videos, Lena tells viewers about what happens behind-the-scenes under the big top. "Circus trainers often force elephants, bears, tigers, and other animals to perform tricks by beating and whipping them, shocking them with electric prods, and jabbing holes in their skin with sharp metal hooks," she says. "I decided to speak out because I'd seen a documentary on a French circus, and people had campaigned to free these lions that were in captivity since they were young. And they managed to do it, and they flew them to Africa, and it was really beautiful. But the fact is, it's still going on."
"Animals in the circus are deprived of everything that is natural and important to them. In their native homelands, the same animals you see in chains, wearing costumes, riding bikes, and being beaten with whips and bullhooks in the circus are free to walk, run, and roam as they please; eat and drink whenever they feel like it; choose lifetime companions; and raise their families," Lena explains.
When they're not performing, animals in circuses are kept in chains—often unable to take a step—or confined to cramped pens and cages that are so small that the animals hardly have enough room to turn around. That's no life at all..
